Is it possible to have thunderbird return to the inbox list of messages when I delete the one I'm reading? I don't want it to open the next/previous message, I want it to return to the list of messages and then I can select the one I want to read next.

Open config editor (tools>preferences>general scroll to bottom) and change mail.close_message_window.on_delete to true. I think that will accomplish what you want. Let me know.
