MS Office attachment received in Thunderbird will not open.

When I receive a MS Office attachment to a Thunderbird e-mail, I am unable to open it. The Office Program opens but gives a message that the document cannot be opened because it is corrupt, there is not enough disc space, or there is not enough RAM. I have more than 1.2 Tbites of free disc space, plenty of RAM, and when the same file is opened on an adjacent computer is opens without difficulty.

This problem does not occur with other file types that are not MS Office files.

When I forward a message with an MS Office attachment to another person in the office, she is able to open the attachment in the appropriate MS Office program. We both use MS Office 13. Then, when she saves the file to a folder on her computer and I access that file across our network, I am able to open the file. This indicates that the problem with opening the file doesn't reside in MS Office, but rather is a problem with Thunderbird.

Any help is appreciated, as I receive many attachments and am currently stuck with an awkward, time consuming work around.
