can't delete history [a crash report]

using for 3 months on new ubunut mate 16.04

i go to delete my history ... choose last month time period. -->restart firefox, i get site suggestions from yesterday. huh. thought i deleted "last month" + "default check marks"

i go again delete my history ... choose "everything" period. -->restart firefox, same site suggestions, the history inexplicably stil contains 2 months of folders.

i go a 3rd time delete my history ... choose everything, every check mark,\ -->same result

i go a fourth time into your inoperative menu (i imagine because i have no life or am crazy myself) --> some combination of efforts managed to delete another month. i now have just march remaining.

i open history browser. i right click on remaining month. i choose delete. -->.NOTHING HAPPENS. you read that correctly. i interface with your user-interface and your program literally doesn't change its state in any discernible way. usually when things break i like to present an error to the user explaining what happened. not sit there ignoring the button press.

--at this point im tired of reading tech support on how to delete a history. a feat of technical engineering that i believe was conquered back in the 90s. i've never messed with my user permissions or those of firefox. it is part of the ubunutu mate and it seems i cannot uninstall it. this should never be a problem. if it is, why no error?? how ? how do you user interface with no errors?

SOLUTION: obliterate profile folder result is first run experience and i can delete history as per normal with the program button presses as expected.

malware? i visited a phishing site one day in firefox (zillow.com add on google for zillow search result instead of the result itself) and firefox became completely unresponisve. i visited same in chrome and was able to close browser with the mouse. maybe this hurt the profile and made the program not delete it. IF PROGRAM COMMANDED TO DELETE SOMETHING ... AND IZ STILL THERE, WHY PROGRAM NOT DETECT THIS AS ERROR???

dealing with sensitive data and privacy issues can be embarrassing for the user and well... "sensitive". so the system for dealing with it otter-bee robust.

If you are using Private Browsing mode then clearing history may function differently. You would have to start Firefox normally to clear history from a regular session. In PB mode all session data is kept in memory.

This can also be a problem with the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history.

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
