When writing a message, inserting a degree symbol inserts the wrong symbol.
Write / Insert / Insert Characters and Symbols ... > select "Common Symbols" and specify the degree symbol: "°". Below are the expected and actual output, as described by the Microsoft Write program:
Character Unicode Hex Browser Rendering Expect: Degree Sign 00B0 ° Actual: Masculine Ordinal Indicator 00BA N/A
This has been happening for "a while". It may have started when I upgraded Thunderbird back when it was version 40 or thereabout, or when I upgraded Windows from v8.0 to v8.1, or from v8.1 to v10.0
I recently uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled it anew. My current version is 45.5.1. The error existed before and after this,

I tried to append my Thunderbird Troubleshooting data both as a txt file and an html file, but both attempts failed. So I tried to copy and paste the information, and that failed. So posted the report and tried to append it with a reply, this reply.

Somehow the font that I was using was set to Calibri, and it has the off degree symbol. I changed it to almost any other, and the inserted degree symbol is what I expected: º
