Little boxed with question marks in them
Is there a way to revert all messages to plain text? The formatting seems to go wrong on a regular basis causing the program to crash or the email to be unreadable for certain character.. they end up as little boxes with a ? in them.

Your little boxes are poor character encoding on the sending end. I have not tried it by I doubt plain text will help with that issue.
On the toolbar 
> View > Message bodies as contains the option for plain text.
However I think you would be better served by changing the character encoding for the message.
On the toolbar > View > Text Encoding.
These issues are usually related to Unicide and western encoding s.
