How do I get Javascript to work? It is enabled in options but nothing happens when I select something that begins "javascript" on the status bar at the bottom of screen.

When I tried to download a file from the Canon U.S.A, I clicked on the "I agree - begin download" button and nothing happened. The information in the status bar at bottom of screen, when the mouse cursor is over the download button is "javascript:downloadFile()". I got following from the error console - Error: The stylesheet http://www.usa.canon.com/wsss/GeneratedPages/wsss_xsl/global.css was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css". Source File: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/i_series/i950_series?selectedName=DriversAndSoftware

There were also many warnings about parsing of commands.

This sort of thing seems to happens whenever whenever javascript is involved.

Make sure that you do not block JavaScript settings and preferences for interactive web pages

  • "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
  • "Remove the Cookies" from sites that cause problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

It is not related to Javascript. Check out What to do if you can't download or save files.

I checked out the "Unable to download or save files" section. The only thing that seemed applicable was the "Reset download actions" section. I renamed the mimeTypes.rdf file to mimeTypes.rdf.old but it didn't seem to have any effect on downloading the file I wanted. There was still no response when I asked for the download.

I have noticed another problem that occurs when I try to download this file. I exit Firefox, then try to restart it. But nothing happens. I have discovered that in the Task Manager that the Firefox process is still running. When I end the Firefox process in the Task Manager, I am then able to restart Firefox.

By the way, I am able to download the file using Internet Explorer without difficulty.

I cleared the cache, removed the cookie for Canon, and started Firefox in the safe mode. In safe mode I was able to download the file without difficulty. I exited Firefox and restarted it in normal mode and was still able to download the file. Problem solved but I'm not sure how or why but thanks for the help. Hopefully, it doesn't happened again.

Update: I discovered the real culprit was a "Zone alarm toolbar" extension which I had disabled before I did the clear cache, remove cookie and safemode. I enabled the "Zone alarm toolbar" and the problems returned. I disabled it again and the problems went away. Needless to say, this extension is permanently disabled now.
