I use Ubuntu with Unity desktop. It would be great to start with something like /opt/firefox/firefox -geometry 500x500+100+50

Hi,

Not sure if it would be easily possible in Unity. Please see Firesizer (it could mess up the UI). Please go through the reviews and ratings.

Hi Wilfred,

Thank you for the answer. I can indeed change the size of the window to a specific size. But when I start firefox it chooses its own (odd) size which is actually not visible because it extends the bottom of the screen, so that even more adjustments are needed for a nice fit. Perhaps we have to wait until Mozille comes up with a new update.

I think Ubuntu customizes Firefox and other software to a great extent to fit in the Unity UI. So I think they take the latest versions of Firefox, customize it and put it in the software repository and this is what end users get via updates like in most other distributions.

I assume you must have already tried firefox -height xxx -width -xxx and it's not working.
