reboot/restart unending loop after installation

Firefox suggested un update, I said ok and got the file Firefox Setup 8.0 in my downloads (details: Firefox Mozilla File version 4.42.0.0 data 2011-11-14 at 21:26 size 14.0MB). I executed it and the setup seemed to go ok after which it asked the PC to be restarted. After the restart it says "Your computer must be restarted to complete previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now? Yes/No" When I reboot I am just back in the same question ie a never-ending loop. The "funny" thing is that if I try to uninstall Firefox I run into the same question, that is, I cannot even uninstall+reinstall Firefox in order to circumwent the problm. What should I do???? I would like to continue using Firefox but have now been forced to use a poorer competitor.

Tried the suggestion offered. It doesnt work for me.
