I can no longer open pdfs in Firefox.

Starting a couple of weeks ago I haven't been able to open PDFs in my Firefox browser. Although there are other pdf viewers, Firefox has features that I use that the others don't. I've tried all the various ideas I've found elsewhere online but none worked. I submitted a ticket to our IT helpdesk, but they say it's a Mozilla Firefox issue. The error message isn't helpful at all, considering there is no web server involved.

I get the error below:

Access to the file was denied

Firefox can’t connect to the server at local file What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the website’s administrator about the problem.

You don't say what OS you use, as the OS can decide what opens PDFs

I'm using Windows 11 Pro 24H2. I can open pdfs with other browsers and adobe acrobat reader, but firefox gives me errors. I updated to the latest version of firefox today, but it still doesn't work. I can open PDFs from a website, just not files saved on my computer that I try to open in firefox.

	Firefox

Version 150.0 Build ID 20260415192539 Distribution ID Update Folder C:\ProgramData\Mozilla-1de4eec8-1241-4177-a864-e594e8d1fb38\updates\308046B0AF4A39CB Update History Update Channel release User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:150.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/150.0 OS Windows_NT 10.0 26100 Application Binary C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

Thanks for the update "just not files saved on my computer that I try to open in firefox. "

With a pdf on the Desktop > Right Click > Open with > Choose another app

Select Firefox and then select { Always ]

Opening the file by right clicking to open in firefox is when I see the problem. I also changed the firefox setting from ask to always. If I choose any other pdf viewer to open the file I don't have any issues. Firefox gives me this error when it tries to open the file:

Access to the file was denied

Firefox can’t connect to the server at local file What can you do about it?

Every other pdf viewer app has permission to open the file, my only issue is that firefox gives me an error and won't display the file.

"Every other pdf viewer app has permission to open the file, my only issue is that firefox gives me an error and won't display the file."

If it was set to Firefox then no other app 'should' open a pdf.

"If I choose any other pdf viewer to open the file I don't have any issues."

or do you mean when another app is set to always ~

"Every other pdf viewer" or "If I choose any other"

One or the other surely

EDIT: Update UK time here, going off line. All the best
