Save customized email pane layout

I can customize my email layout via View settings to my liking, but if I close Thunderbird that customized layout is lost. Is there some way to save it/make it the default? And is there some way to turn off the "Welcome to Thunderbird" pane which appears whenever the program opens? Thanks.
