After WIN10 upgrade, Thunderbird just cranks away and never fully loads.

The address book is there. The folder structure is there. There is just no access to old email nor do the current emails get downloaded. I have checked the firewall and Thunderbird is allowed in. I have messed around with the profile files. There are no Thunderbird files in Windows.old. Nothing seems to work.

sounds like you have usgraded ok. But it may be what ever you have as an anti virus is cranking away in the background. fighting for access to the profile files.

What anti virus are you using?
