I keep creating tab groups (name them) but after I close down Firefox and start it up again the groups are no longer there.

Is this a bug, a feature, or am I missing some kind of "Save Groups" step?

App tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox Profile Folder

Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the "Browsing History"

What they need to do is make a way to save the group names you create so that you can recall a group whenever you want; sort of like how a group/folder of bookmarks would recall.

This way if you are working on multiple projects and you group your tabs by project you can just close the projects you aren't working on at that given moment (rather than leaving hundreds of unnecessary-at-the-time tabs open for who knows how long). Then when you're ready to jump back in to that task/project you can just type in the group name or select some flyout to open up all of the relevant tabs.

My Browser is set to retain history, so I don't think that's the problem. It looks more likely that it lacks the functionality I was expecting.

I was expecting something along the lines of what Xtremefaith described (you describe the exact use case, whereby I want have different groups of tabs for different projects). I expected to be able to go to the "Group your tabs" button on the toolbar and see all my previously set/saved tab groups.

Is there a formal way to request this functionality be added?

I tried to make a group or tabs and after creating it I shut down the tabs that were open and went to my home page. I did not shut down FF4. I went to my tab groups and the tab was there with the name I gave it, but the group was just my home page now. Function just doesn't work at all.

what is the purpose of grouping tabs if they can't be recalled?

the way it works actually *makes* sense.

Grouping Tabs is for arranging multiple of tabs in one single Window. benefits: -only one Window/Task in the Taskbar (of the operating system) -in Browser window you only see *some* of your open tabs, not all of them. so you can arrange them topic-related and switch easily between them.

SOLUTION 1: for storing/saving groups you should simply use Bookmarks instead. Just activate a Group, right-click on a Tab -> Bookmark All Tabs... this saves all tabs from the groups into a folder in Bookmarks, which can be opened in a later session with "Open All In Tabs" from the Bookmarks-menu

SOLUTION 2: don't close the groups. But first [configure FF to not load all content at startup]. If you (re)start FF it restores all groups (and it's tabs), but does *not* load the content of the tabs, so they remain empty as long as you don't activate (=click on) them.
