already found this same topic, but was archived Had exactly the same problem for weeks now (too lazy to come to the forum, but so exasperated that I'm here now)
I run W10 21H2 up to date, and Thunderbird 102.1.2 I do exactly what is described in cited post which used to work ..(can't say when it stops working) with the same result "BLACK" (only sometimes a quick "flickering" with the chosen color, but "Black is Back

I believe the problem is different. The issue on MACs appears to be different from Windows. let's treat this as a new issue. The steps are: - highlight text and click the color button - a small window opens (attached example) - click the color button and select a color. Press OK. - now the selected color should appear in the box where I placed the arrow. If it is other than #000000, then the color was successfully picked.
Let me know how it goes.
Yes! this is exactly what I get Then Click OK
and Nothing happen But as mentioned, when I send the message it is actually received in RED ..... but not in TB the uploaded images show the different steps - composing - sent - received by TB - received by gmail
There obviously a problem in TB UI with colors
As long as thunderbird works as anticipated for me, I cannot say there is a problem. Your screenshot looks unusual of the edit page. I will appreciate if you open a page to write, enter a line of text, highlight the text, click the color button, then pick a color from the box (please make it blue, I'm color-blind to red), press OK, and then do a screenshot. I'm hoping to see something like the attached. the screen you sent showed additional conflict on thunderbird and i'm hoping my requested page may show something. Thanks. The color feature has not been changed in a long long time and I'm trying to see if there is anything to see. Also, please send to yourself so we can see how Thunderbird shows the text. I appreciate your help.
I'm not sure of what you're expecting....ib addition to previous message
so, the same in blue just to ease
here is the very detailed processes and results for a message from me (gmail) to me (same gmail) Also joined is same message as html (nested fonts could be a clue) the same occurs obviously with any other accounts
Jean-Louis EDIT: add a possible seach track, and change one wrong screenshot (the gmail one)

Ok, it just makes no sense. This feature works fine for thousands of users, but not for you. I cannot see this as a bug because it works - but not for you. My only thought here is to install thunderbird over the top of the current installation, hoping that something must have been corrupted in initial update.
OK i'll do that (cautiously because of history) Thanks for your help
Have you tried restarting Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode on the help menu. If that did make things visible. The next step it to try disabling hardware acceleration in settings.
a breath of hope!
......Ah Ah! let's try this ......
and gasp! nothing new ☹☹
but Thank you for your help anyway
You have a setting which is set up to override whatever colours are selected, so it might say 'red' when you view the source, but it is being overridden by your settings to display as black.
Menu icon > Settings > General Language & Appearance section click on 'Colours' button
Set the following:
- Text colour = black
- Background = white
- Do not select 'Use System Colours'
- Override the colours..... set as 'Never'
- click on 'OK'
Open a new Write message Test again.
