connecting to incoming (POP3) mail server looks normal including statement 'downloading messages' and '1 of 42' status bar activity, but no messages come into mailbox and there are no further messages or errors reported. other devices (connected to IMAP servers) get mail normally. ISP reports no changes in incoming server name or port specifications.

try disabling email scanning in your anti virus program and rebooting the device to make sure the change is in effect.
