When I opened Firefox, all my profile settings were back to a Default. Lost all my settings. Looked up solution on Google, couldn't find an "Old Firefox Data Folder" anywhere.

Tried the other listed "profiles" in my profiles folder, none were my most recent profile with all my settings from the past months.

How can I find the profile that was used before my update which was done 7/27/25 ish.

Thanks, Jean [email removed]

Hi Jean, when you say you lost your settings, does that include bookmarks, history, open tabs, add-ons, etc., or literally your settings for various behaviors of Firefox?

Do you normally sign your Firefox into a Mozilla account (for Sync, etc.)? Note: I'm not suggesting any change here, just asking.

I still have my bookmark tabs on my top "title bar" - but I don't have a set of TABs that I saved a few days ago, nor my Home Screen setup (icons, etc.), nor my "background look".

Thanks, Jean

Hi Jean, regarding the tabs, did you get back the open tabs, but not the saved tab groups? If you didn't any tabs, could you check whether either of these are available (not hidden or grayed out):

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Restore Previous Session
  • (menu bar or Alt+S) History > Restore Previous Session

If they are missing or grayed, check either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • (menu bar or Alt+S) History > Recently Closed Windows

Anything there you can restore?

The loss of the shortcuts from the built-in Firefox Home / new tab page does sound like what would happen with a Refresh. If there was an Old Firefox Data folder, it would be on your Windows desktop. If Firefox failed to move your old profile folder there, then it should still in in the original location, but would be missing from the internal list. In other words:

  • There would be a folder in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
  • That is not listed on the about:profiles page

Do you notice any mismatch there?

Thanks for you help! What I lost is not worth all this effort. I just now have no trust to do an update in the future if I have to rebuild my "profile" every time I do an update :( - this has never happened before on an update. I can easily rebuild the "tab group" that I lost. But my background settings are different and my Home Page frequently used ICONS are reset. That will be a pain if it happens every time I do an update. SAD

Also, didn't mention it before, but I had to rebuild my Google Accounts page with my 3 email accounts that I use daily. Again, this has never happened on other updates. Just FYI . . .
