After the most recent update, I now have to double click on the message to read it when it used to show up in the current message pane. I found posts referring to tools->options->display but there is no such path in my Thunderbird. Using Windows 10 pro version 128.2.1esr (64-bit)

Try pressing F8 to toggle the message pane on an off. And perhaps get rid of ccleaner or whatever other software is deleting your settings to "protect your privacy"
