In Win7, I have been running Firefox 60.9.0, the latest ESR version, for a while. I recently became aware that my system isn't receiving at any of my yahoo "disposable addresses" (including the one used here) so was checking that Javascript is enabled in Firefox. Going to the about:config page, I find no listing for "Javascript.enabled" although I have many lines beginning "javascript.options. " Does this new version somehow lack javascript ability, did my last upgrade somehow loose it, or was my system somehow corrupted since then? More importantly, what should I do to remedy the situation, that is, to enable javascript?

I'm hoping that will also solve my mail problem.

Ooops, sorry. Wrong answer.

I found this;

JavaScript errors may be caused by a corrupt registry entry. Use a good registry repair program. You can also try this;

Click on the start button (windows logo on Vista). In the search field type cmd. Right click on that icon then select Run as Administrator.

One of these commands should work on your system.

regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 VBscript.dll Source http://answers.microsoft.com

(A message should appear confirming that the process was successful) You may need to restart the PC after you are done..

Thanks for the quick reply; unfortunately, neither command was recognized, as shown by the screen print taken of that window.

Besides Firefox, I also use IE11 which appears to have javascript enabled, according to my Internet Options settings. Might that still appear normal if the registry were corrupt wrt javascript? Would the problem be computer-wide, or is it possible it's just with Firefox?

I'm not really familiar with any registry repair programs; can you suggest any? BTW, I don't use registry cleaners, as they are said to cause more problems than the good they do.

If JavaScript was disabled in your Firefox, half the web would tell you about it. Most likely, it's not disabled.

I don't think it's possible to lose the preference from about:config, unless an Enterprise policy can hide it. ??

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste javas and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If necessary, click the Preference Name column heading once or twice to sort alphabetically in case it somehow got out of order.

Can you find javascript.enabled above the javascript.options preferences?

I had scanned the entire list and searched using just "java" too, and couldn't find the entry but reordering the list as you suggested in #3 did work and now I find the entry exists, with a value of "true". That solves this smaller problem but means this didn't cause the larger mail problem, so it still exists. Yahoo customer service has been of little help with that. Might you know anything about such problems? I could give more details if you'd like.

In any case, thanks for the quick and good response so far.

Hi GreyFox, I'm not sure what you mean by:

I recently became aware that my system isn't receiving at any of my yahoo "disposable addresses" (including the one used here)...

Are you getting rejections when you or people you know try to send to those addresses? Or is the problem that when you log into those accounts, the inboxes are empty? Or if you set up forwarding on those accounts so you don't need to check them individually, are no messages are getting forwarded from those accounts?

more options

Those addresses are all part of the same account; a new message has a drop-down menu allowing me to choose which to send from, the main (@sbcglobal.net) or the secondary (basename-version_designator@yahoo,com) If I send from the yahoo account, using either my main or any of the secondary (disposable) addresses, to the main address, it arrives. If I send to any of the disposables using either the main or secondaries, I first get a notice the message was successfully sent but shortly later get a "mailer-daemon" Failure Notice (with error code 554) and the message never is received. I can send to a second (proton mail) address using either the Yahoo main or secondary address, but sending from Protonmail to the secondary addresses also fails. For years, I have used a few of the secondary addresses for agencies and groups I belong to. I haven't received any messages from any of the secondaries in a few months. I assume others get my messages from the secondary accounts, but I never get their replies. I first realized I had the problem when I was going to set up a new address and found the original base name was missing; the page was asking me to establish one (that couldn't be ever changed), even though my list of current secondary addresses based on the old base name was still showing on the left of the page. I did nothing, including reentering the old base name, as I was unsure what the results would be.

I did also notice that Yahoo has a feature I'd previously been unaware of that lets one set up (different?) addresses which can only be sent from, not be received at. I have never used the feature, but wondered (to yahoo customer service) if corrupted software could have confused the two features on my system.

Hi GreyFox, a 554 notice is a rejection from the mail server. Could it be an anti-spam setting or other setting on the account?

Sorry for the delay; I was up late and had outside chores to do the last few hours. Nothing is new about my system besides the MS updates (I'm in the AskWoody Group B) and I get the same results even after restarting my system and leaving the extra security programs (Malwarebytes, S.antispy) closed. MS Security Essentials may be automatically starting; I haven't checked it, but don't think it's the problem. I also use a VPN normally, but get the same results with it not turned on. I used to use IE11 for my mail and although it is now "unsupported", can still use it to get the Basic Mail version, which gives me the same results as the New Mail version here in Firefox which is supported. Since Yahoo was taken over by Oath, and various other changes occurred in Yahoo Mail, I think the problem is in the mail program, not the rest of the system. I've attached two edited screenshots of the mail settings page, one showing the settings page and the second after the "Add" (a disposable address) button is clicked. Notice in the high right side of the second shot where it says to create the first disposable address, despite the list of existing ones on the left side.

Hi GreyFox, it's not your locally installed software, it's the mail server (Yahoo) that is rejecting the messages. Does the rejection notice provide any details about why it was rejected?

That's what I tried to tell Yahoo Customer Service. I sent a copy of the entire Failure Message to them, after earlier explaining the entire situation in detail. Supposedly their engineers worked on this starting about three weeks ago. Really? I have gotten no feedback, no questions about my system from them, nothing of value from Yahoo so far. The suggestion "Please use the new mail version for adding another disposable email address by switching mail versions." doesn't help much because it ignores the situation; I have the New Mail version open in a supported (Firefox) browser, and it ignores the conflict shown in the second document of my last reply here. . I have attached here a document with three sections, the first with the top of the Failure notice; the second being the last response from Yahoo C.S.; and the third showing the link to the Troubleshooting page and the suggestions which are listed there. I think the bottom data of the Failure Notice is of no value. I could also post it if you want. Edit: Sorry, forgot to add the attachment...and am having trouble finding it. Seems to be that I used an unsupported file type. Am working on a fix. OK, have copied the text to Paint. May not look as good, but has the same information, although less readable. Any better solutions should use for it?

You told them you got "user suspended or mailbox not found" and they said try again with a different disposable address, and it had the identical issue?

I don't know what to say. Maybe Yahoo isn't the best email service.

Did you try to remove all these disposable addresses and re-add one or more and test whether this works in case the current list is corrupted or you have too many addresses?

I got no significant responses for three weeks and the last one sounds like it came from someone with no real knowledge of computers who doesn't comprehend the situation and is used to teaching second graders.

I agree about the company, but am somewhat stuck with the situation for now.

I intend to next stop by Yahoo Headquarters to see if I can get anyone there to listen. Need to go now...

Well, as I suspected, I was stopped at the front gate...but had a long conversation with the gatekeeper who gave me a phone number she promised would get me through to a live person. It did, to someone in Eastern Europe. Much of the time his words were slightly truncated, as if a defective voice-detecting microphone was in use, but after explaining the situation and being on hold, he said he couldn't help and that the problem was with the AT&T system. They said the opposite is true, and Im caught in between. I know friends of some old, well-known hackers; wonder if anyone would be interested in looking into the problem, just for fun and the good of humanity? I'm not ready to do any experimenting myself, yet.

After more calls and further emphatic explanation in the last one to AT&T, the worker there contacted the "yahoo team" (again?) but this time the engineers found a problem on the yahoo server. For whatever reason (server HDD wearing out, so needs to be replaced?), this won't be fixed immediately but is being/will be worked on. I requested a status report be Emailed to me, but nothing has yet arrived.

Just out of caution, I will try to copy my current list of disposable addresses, perhaps taking a FF full-page screenshot and clipping the list column from it.

I have another non-immediate problem still though; loss of use of those D.A.'s including the one used with the Firefox account has locked my Firefox-send page. Mozilla used to have a working customer service phone line but that seems gone. Everything I see on the various Help pages deals with common problems, not one like this; anyone here know where to look or go to reactivate the account while that address is still disabled? I don't want to change the account address for various reasons.
