For many years, websites have correctly placed my location as New York City, often the correct neighborhood. About two months ago, things changed and I don't know why. Most websites don't show me in Manhattan. Instead, shopping sites will show stores in towns in Queens or Long Island! A couple do still get it right. I almost never use Wi-Fi, but both Ethernet and Wi-Fi IP addresses correctly display as New York City (which should translate to Manhattan, not the towns in Queens and certainly not Long Island.)

I've read other posts on FF and various other sites before writing this. I think a few months before, I changed about:config to show geo.enable = true

(I have Tracking Protection, but that's only for third-party advertisers, and shouldn't affect my location.)

Does anyone know if I can finesse FF so all sites pick up my Ethernet IP address?

Such a detail is possibly stored in a cookie.

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You can use websites like these to see how your location is reported via a reverse DNS look up of your IP:

cor-el, the IP lookup site you show is what I used. As I mentioned, the address is correct.

My settings always "clear the cache" every time I close FF, which I do many times daily, so that's not the cause. And, I used to always delete cookies on exiting FF. Just a few days ago, I changed to keep them until expire, as I thought that might help. but didn't. so that's the not the cause, either.
