I receive this error whenever I close and reopen Firefox 38.0.1. I have tried the solutions recommended at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1063033, and they do not work. To make sync active, I must click the Preferences button in the error message (at bottom of window) and log in to Sync manually. My FF is set up to always use InPrivate browsing and to not save any passwords. I do use an automated password/login app named LastPass. However, the problem with Sync seems to have started within the past couple of weeks. The error repeats every time I open a new window.

The Sync version used in Firefox 34 and later uses the password manager to store the name (e-mail) and password to be used to connect to the Sync server. The chrome://FirefoxAccounts entry in the password manager stores the authentication data (kA and kB) in JSON format. Previous Firefox versions stored this data in the signedInUser.json file in the profile folder, but the current version only stores the sessionToken in this file and needs the password manager for the Sync credentials.

So if you disable the Password Manager then you can't log in automatically because the credentials are stored. PB mode should cause issue.

Thanks. Will this work: I allow FF to remember my history and store passwords. Then, I log in to Sync. Next I return to Private Browsing. No additional passwords are stored, by my Sync credentials are in the Password Manager.
