Firefox ran yesterday, won't run today, can't remove it, can't create new profile
Firefox ran yesterday but won't start today -- all I get is a Windows XP "critical stop" tone. Firefox isn't running nor is it in task manager.
When I try to remove the Firefox program from Add or Remove, all I get is a brief screen flicker.
I can't create a new profile: neither firefox.exe -p nor C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p nor "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p work.
I have run Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware to no effect.
(Also: downloaded troubleshooter-1.1a-fx.xpi but it didn't open in top corner nor does it run.)
Advice and suggestions appreciated.

First, try this;
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;
Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences
Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
Then restart.
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
- Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
- Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see

Thanks, FredMcD, your third email solved the problem!
For those with similar issues, here's what I found.
First, I am running chrome so I couldn't start firefox. The procedure described wasn't available from Chrome -- and this wasn't clear (to me):
"How to start Firefox in Safe Mode
Click the menu button New Fx Menu , click help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog."
Next, I looked to remove Firefox from Windows Firewall, but it wasn't there. I added it as a Program but to no effect. I updated McAfee and reset firewall to defaults, but to no effect.
Finally, the Full Installer solved the problem!
Glad to help. Happy Computing.
