Each search/url input from mobile home page opens new tab, using phone back button doesn't close them?

When I open Firefox on Android (version 80.x.x, latest version I can get from the Play Store), I'm greeted with the mobile home page/new tab page. I type in a search term or URL, and the results open in a new tab. When I try to go back using my phone's back button, I get taken back to the home/new tab page, but that search/website is still open in a tab.

Am I missing something? I switched from using chrome, where the phone back button would take me back to the new tab page, not generate a new tab for each search or website I type in and keep them all open until I close them manually.

I want to be able to specify when to keep a tab or open a new tab, not have a new one created for me repeatedly.
