More of a whine really. When I hit send, and email doesn't get sent for some reason, unsent email dissappears, and you have to compose a new email.

I call it a bug, probably more of a function issue. When I hit send, and email doesn't get sent for some reason, unsent email dissappears, and you have to compose it again from scratch. What would be nice is if it was retained in an Outbox folder, so you can try sending it again later, which is how Mac Mail handles failed send attempts. It has happened many times. If I think of it, I should start saving a draught before hitting send. Anyone know of a way to fix this?

There is an Outbox folder under Local Folders. Have you looked there yet?

I have 2 Outboxes, there's nothing in them. When Send fails the email disappears into thin air.

What causes the send to fail? as in what error messages. Clicking send should succeed more than 99.9% of the time unless your internet connection of faulty. If an error is reported by the server when you are sending Thunderbird advises of the error and you get a chance to retry or save the email. So I am somewhat at a loss as to what is occurring in your world.

Thanks Matt... After sending email fails, a notice window says something like "Email failed to send", and offers the options Try again, or Cancel, or you can close the notice window. In any case you have to respond, and the window closes and the email is gone with the wind. It's not saved in the Outbox - that would be a logical feature (like Mac Mail).

Don't know why send fails, could very likely be faulty internet. I use Teksavvy which is only 7 megabits per second tops, usually less. We get frequent interuptions, don't know why. Sending often fails with attachments larger than say, 6 Mb, which happened with a 12 Mb attachment last night. Which is odd, because there was no problem RECEIVING the same 12 Mb attachment in inbox.

And, when sending an attachment in Thunderbird, it can take several minutes to upload and THEN minutes more to copy to Save folder, which is incredibly slow compared to Mac Mail. In Mac Mail the message is copied to send folder almost immediately, at the same time as the upload. I suspect this extra step (saving to Sent folder) takes so long because it has to upload to the Mozilla server, then download to the local Thunderbird Sent folder. Why not have it save to Sent folder directly? I wonder. Sadly I'm not a programmer or I might pitch in.

What mail provider are you using? Is the account IMAP or POP?

Note your 7mbps will be download speed. upload it typically about 10% of the download speed.

Note that there is no Mozilla Server where mail is concerned. Thunderbird phones home to check for updates both to itself and add-ons, and to get default configurations for new mail accounts. But that is about it really.

If your account is IMAP the send mail will be copied to your providers mail server sent folder. That can be slow. In the case of Outlook.com/Hotmail and Gmail it is also redundant and can be disabled. Both those providers make a copy of everything going through their SMTP servers. Other IMAP account can be redirected to a local sent folder on local folders to speed up the save to a sent folder (just not the one on the server)
