I'm trying to add the adobe Flash Plugin to Firefox 8.0.1 under 64 bit linux but the "plugin" directory where you used to copy the "libflashplayer.so" file has dissapeared. I have installed the latest "flash-plugin" rpm from Adobe (flash-plugin-11.1.102.55-release.x86_64) and this contains the libflashplayer.so file but I cannot get firefox to recoginise its presence. I also tried copying the "libflashplayer.so" file to my ~/.mozilla/plugins directory but this also failed to work

Hi,

Please see this.

You can select the yum version here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Hi Wilfred, thanks for your suggestions

The "flash-plugin" I have came from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and was installed after firefox with "yum install" This rpm installs into usr/bin, usr/lib64 and usr/share where as my firefox is in /usr/local. Having done the install what you used to do was copy /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so into (in my case) /usr/local/firefox/plugins

I had a look at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Flash and on a 64 bit architecture it seems to imply that there is no need to copy the libflashplayer.so any more so I guess firefox is suposed to look in all the standard places

On the "mozilla" site https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/installing-flash#w_installing-the-flash-plugin-manually It seems to suggest the copy is still needed. The above page has a specific link (about 1/2 way down on the RHS under the adds) to confirm this is still required for Firefox 8

Please try putting the libflashplayer.so shared library into /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins and chmod 755 if necessary.

I think it would be better to go with the yum installation instead of the manual rpm version of flash player because the customized Firefox from the RH/Fedora repositories which I assume you installed via yum, may look for the support files in slightly different filesystem hierarchies.

Did you install a 64 bit Firefox version or the regular 32 bit Firefox version?

If you have a 32 bit Firefox version then you need a 32 bit Flash version.

See Flash Player on 64-bit operating systems:

You can create a plugins folder in the Firefox profile folder and place a symlink to the Flash plugin in that folder if Firefox doesn't find it in the default locations.
