auto search - how do you turn it off

I don't like the Auto search feature- i.e. i type a search into the address bar and it automatically brings me to a page connected to the keyword one. It's driving me nuts. I want to be given the list of sites that match my keyword. Some online help advised changing config file - I'm afraid to go there...
