Draft never saved. Where can I retrieve it?

I am really really distraught right now. It took me two weeks to get the time and focus to write a long reply to a company's nice email to me. Stayed up till 2am to write it. Deliberately wanted to re-read it in the morning before sending. Gone. Nowhere to be found. I pressed "Save to draft" before closing my laptop. But not saved. This account actually has a "draft" folder, unlike most of my other accounts in Thunderbird, which I also cannot figure out and no one has helped me with.

Seems you have several mail accounts.

I can see a load of 'popstate-n.dat' folders which are in an account part of which is shown in image. There is clearly an issue with the download for that account as those files should not be visible. Looks like the download record store file has been corrupted. But that's another issue.

re :This account actually has a "draft" folder, unlike most of my other accounts in Thunderbird, which I also cannot figure out and no one has helped me with.

I checked your Profile and this is the only question you have asked - so not sure what you mean by 'no one as helped me with'. I cannot see a question asking about it.

I'm assuming all those accounts are Pop mail accounts.

General Info: In Pop accounts, folders get created when you use them. They get created in the account as used in the 'From' email address of email being composed. So, a 'Drafts' folder will appear when you are creating an email and choose to save as draft and a 'Sent' folder appears when you send from the account. If you have used an email address just to receive mail, but have never sent an email using that email address then the Pop account will not have those folders.

This is unusual..... In 'Local Folders' account: There is a folder which says Drafts on an account and also two Sent folders for different accounts. This is a bit odd so I'm wondering if at some point you tried to set your pop accounts as deferred accounts using a Global Inbox. Or whether you have got the 'Account SEttings' > Copies & Folders' for the account incorrectly set up.

You have two accounts with a very similar name Kay@ and Kei@ and identical part after the @. The one with 'Kay@' has an Inbox with 12267 emails - that's alot of emails to keep in one simple text document - that's a separate topic which maybe advise on later. But I notice there is a 'drafts - kay@etc' folder in 'Local Folders' Lets check this first:

For the 'Kay@email address' account

  • Account SEttings > Server Settings
  • Click on 'Advanced' button located on the right side
  • Please make sure this set up to say 'Inbox for this account'
  • click on 'OK'
  • Select 'Copies & Folders '

Check you have correct settings

  • Select 'Place a copy in'
  • Select 'Sent folder on' and choose correct account name 'Kay@correctdomain'

Now check Archives,

  • Select 'Keep message archives in'
  • Select 'Archives folder on' and choose correct account name 'Kay@correctdomain'

Drafts and Templates

  • Select 'Drafts folder on' and choose correct account name 'Kay@correctdomain'
  • Select 'Templates folder on' and choose correct account name 'Kay@correctdomain'

Then start to create a new message using From as the 'Kay@email address Just enter subject as Test and put some random text in compise then click on 'Save as Draft'

Does a Draft folder appear in that Kay@ account? Does it contain the draft test message ?

re: the email you were composing which you say does not appear in the expected drafts folder Is it possible you were actualy composing using the wrong From email address ? Look in Local Folders and select the 'Drafts -Kay@accountname' folder Is that draft saved in this location ?

Seems you have several mail accounts. Thank you for your reply. Last time I asked a question was in a thread from someone else with the same problem. His was resolved, mine wasn't. I'm not very geeky so would appreciate input to keep things working! The draft email I really wish I could retrieve right now was in address kei@super... I've used Thunderbird for some 20 years. Migrated from laptop to laptop maybe 4 times. In 2020 I switched email provider in a big way, from Telus to Bluehost (under domain name super... ). So all the telus accounts on Thunderbird are not functioning anymore, just left there as archive for reference...is that a bad idea?? "Popstate..." items all to do telus accounts which I'm not concerned with. The only functioning email accounts are the 4 super... and the compassionkey. All are IMAP except for Kei@super... on POP. When I follow your instructions to click on "Advanced..." button. This is what I get(below two screenshots). Is the "IMAP server directory" supposed to be filled in? If yes, I have attached the Bluehost webmail list of settings, would you please tell me what to type in?

Did you verify draft folder of every account in your Thunderbird ? Draft email is saved in draft folder of the Account from which you intend to send. Example : after click on New message, if by mistake you change the from Account A to from Account B, your draft email will be save in draft folder of B account instead of account A.

As far as Copies and Folders, all accounts HAD settings like what's currently in Kei@super... screenshot attached.

Because of unshown folders problem with the other accounts, I followed a suggestion to the other person's posted question (as mentioned above), and switched settings to this, like in Kay@super... screenshot below. Didn't solve my problem of sent/draft/archive folders reappearing. But I didn't bother to change settings back.

I have sent out many emails from both these accounts. Kei@ is my personal account to everyone which I use daily. Kay@ is mostly my subscription account, but I do write/forward emails from there to my friends occasionally, including within this past week...no, a sent folder didn't show up.

Didn't happen with me. But thanks for thought.

I was replying to someone's email in a thread already, no reason to change my "from" address.

That Kay@ account is an imap mail account. So it will not auto create a folder like a pop account. You can only subscribe to see whatever folders are on the server.

You can check this:

  • In Folder Pane
  • Right click on the kay@ account name folder and select 'Subscribe'
  • It should show a list of folders on the server.
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • Select folders you want to see and click on 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

It would be helpful if you expanded that Kay@ account folder and the Inbox folder so all folders are visible. Then post an image.

Remove the server directory set it to blank. also with the namespace. I have never heard of one ending in a period. but leave it out entirely and see what happens. I have a feeling your manually set namespace is simply not correct and it is not being overridden by the server response to the namespace command.

This bug is older than many of the developers I think https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80858 Yet it is still around and it may well be having some influence on this.

In support to Matts comment Some info:

Namespaces are used when your account has shared folders. For instance, your inbox is accessible only to you, but there may be a folder shared with other users. Personal namespace determines the directory are that is only accessible to you.

Where it says namespace - you have : "INBOX." Edit this so it says: "" That's two speech marks - typically located on keyboard on number 2 key. So it looks like the image at the link above. Click on OK

Then exit and restart Thunderbird

Thank you Matt and Toad-Hall

I did as you both told me. How do I tell if it made a difference? Pane at side no different than before, kay@ account still doesn't show subscribed folders like sent and draft.

Any setting I can change for my pop account kei@?

re: kay@email addess

The image does not show what you have as subfolders in the Inbox. Are they only ordinary subfolders which you created ? As this is an IMAP account...and you have just altered the advanced setting. Recheck the following:

  • In Folder Pane
  • Right click on the kay@ account name folder and select 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • Select/Highlight the Drafts folder and click on 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

REport on results.

re:Any setting I can change for my pop account kei@? You should have this for the pop account and based on image provided earlier it all looks correct. Copies & Folders Draft for pop 'Drafts folder on' and select 'kei@account

Can we just check what account this is pointing to :

  • Account Settings > Server settings for kei@account
  • Look bottom right for 'Local directory:.text area..'
  • click anywhere in that text area and keep using the right arrow key to move to the right until it stops revealing data.
  • Please post an image showing what it says in 'Local directory'

Then do this:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • scroll down to 'Mail and News Accounts'
  • Post an image showing all data OR just copy all data and paste into this forum.

In Folder Pane

  • Right click on kei@ Drafts folder and select 'Properties'
  • Please post an image showing what it says. I'm interested in what it says for Location.

re:Any setting I can change for my pop account kei@?

This is the entirety of Local Directory text: C:\Users\kklam\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\1qesvvk8.default\Mail\box3139.bluehost.com Attached is image of where I copied from, scrolled furthest to right.

I'm not sure where to find this part of your instructions "Help > Troubleshooting Information..."

Attached also is Properties under Draft folder. I clicked on "Repair Folder" as well, but nothing seems to happen.

re: kay@email addess

At this moment I'm unable to bring up the folders list in Subscribe panel for any of the IMAP accounts: kay@, info@, KeiKay@. Waited a good 5 minutes, still nothing. That's why I replied to second part of your instructions first. I've tried twice now. Also stopped it and hit refresh, same, still waiting...

Don't think internet is slow here. Youtube videos have no problem.

re :I'm not sure where to find this part of your instructions "Help > Troubleshooting Information..."

Either:

  • Click on the menu app icon (3 lines) located top right on Unified Toolbar
  • It will show you options
  • click on 'Help' and then click on 'Troubleshooting Information
  • It opens in a new tab
  • Scroll down to 'Mail and News Accounts' section.

OR:

  • via 'Menu Bar' toolbar enabled (File, Edit, View etc)
  • 'Help' is the last one on that toolbar - click on it to see options
  • click on 'Troubleshooting Information
  • It opens in a new tab
  • Scroll down to 'Mail and News Accounts' section.

For the IMAP kay@ account - I notice the original subscribe list has INBOX and list of main folders in that INBOX can you try this:

  • Account Settings > Server Settings
  • click on 'Advanced'
  • IMAP server directory: INBOX
  • select checkbox 'Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages'
  • Do not select 'Allow server to override these namespaces' - leave it unchecked.
  • click on 'OK'

Exit Thunderbird and wait a few moments for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird

Wait until all accounts have connected/downloaded from server.

In Folder Pane Has the IMAP Kay@ account got all of it's folders ? right click on kay@ account name folder and select 'Subscribe' Does list appear ? If yes - please highlight/select fodlers and click on subscribe, then click on OK

Please report back on what happens.

re: For the IMAP kay@ account -

Suddenly the Subscribe list shows up today! See attached. Today "archive" folder shows up on every account! But they're all empty no message (which makes sense as I never archived anything)

Local directory far right scroll is attached.

Also two screenshots of 1)Mail and 2)IMAP Mail
