Bookmarks rearranged following latest update
Firefox mobile version 138 on Samsung Galaxy A14 5G
For years I've had my bookmarks arranged in a specific order. The day after the most recent Firefox update I discovered that my bookmarks have somehow been rearranged in alphabetical order.
What caused this to happen and how do I prevent it from happening again?

In Firefox for Android you have the following options:
- Sort by A to Z
- Sort by Z to A
- Sort by newest
- Sort by oldest
You can switch to Sort by oldest.
This is a total kludge, but you can edit your bookmarks to add a number at the beginning of the label. Then, sorted alphabetically, the order will be what you wanted/had before.
Drawbacks:
- impractical for large numbers of bookmarks/folders
- awkward to reorder later or to add a new one somewhere in the middle
I wish Mozilla had had the foresight to add a "do not sort my bookmarks" toggle (or option in the list) - but, sadly, they didn't.

Are you sure about that? Keep in mind that you're responding to a months old thread. Things are changing.

Running 138.0.4 under Android myself. Yes, I'm sure.
But please do enlighten us all if you have a better idea (than what you've already posted above).
There will be 5 options soon.

Glad to hear it. It remains to be seen what "custom order" entails (the implication being that it will be entirely up to the user to determine the order, but ...)
Also, "foresight" means that you think of these things at the time that you are doing the design work and before you begin revisions or rewrites, not belatedly in reaction to negative feedback from users ("Oh carp, they don't like any of the 4 limited options we've provided.")

Hi Zapfenzieher,
Please be aware that most of the people who answer questions here are other users volunteering their time (like TyDraniu), not Mozilla employees or developers. If you want to leave feedback for developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Share ideas and feedback…. Alternatively, you can use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.
You can also file a bug report or feature request. See File a bug report or feature request for Mozilla products for details.
@Kiki, thanks. I am keenly aware of that. I am a user myself, volunteering my time here. I merely made a (potentially useful) suggestion to @Franco for a workaround and an observation -- which did not call for any response from anyone -- originally. Clearly the Mozilla developers are already well aware of the shortcomings of their bookmark sort offerings (although perhaps not all: "Sort by newest", "Sort by oldest" -- what do those even mean, literally?) or they would not be augmenting the list now, so any further suggestion in that regard from me would not be particularly useful.
@TyDraniu, check your facts. Firefox v. 138 -- with bookmark sorting -- was released on Apr 29, 2025. OP (@Franco) made his original post on May 3, 2025. Today is May 20, 2025. Ergo, this thread cannot be "months old". Your first response to my posting was/remains completely superfluous because it (a) is factually incorrect and (b) does not help anyone using the current version.

Thanks for volunteering in this platform. I was trying to avoid the impression that you're talking to a Mozilla employee in this thread while it's not the case for Tydraniu.
I hear you with what you mean by our lack of foresight. Let's be real, users don't like when the feature that they relied on doesn't behave the same way. However, at least I have a good news that the fix for this issue is scheduled to land in version 140 which planned to go out on June 24.
