Why has firefox gotten so slow

Firefox has slowed down so much I have stopped using it. When I try to scroll through Facebook it takes 10 seconds at least to move after I have scrolled with my mouse. Emails take 12-20 seconds to open and then same amount of time to delete. This is crazy!!!
