I want to remove the "X" (close tab)
I've tried setting browser.tabs.closeButtons = 2 but that doesn't work anymore.

That is for the close 'X' on each tab on the window. You want to remove the close window 'X' upper right corner?

No I want to remove the X's from the tabs. I think they are in my way and I only use middle-click to close tabs anyway.

My understanding was that I could just add the preference to about:config and it would work as before. It's very user unfriendly to have to install an addon to do something that's always been there.
