I can't get into thunderbird because the computer just keeps giving me the message my connection to server mail.verizon.net is timed out. What can I do?

You could contact Verizon about this issue. On my computer I get the same result. You can access your Verizon email via http://webmail.verizon.net .
I would suggest updating Thunderbird to the following: set incoming.verizon.net as the Incoming mail server. set outgoing.verizon.net as the Outgoing mail server
