the back arrow does not function and I cannot see the URL which previous version did. Can I get this functionality back?

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Tried the safe mode start up, reset to default and yet the back/forward arrows still don't work. What now?
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

- You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
- To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
