why won't the automatic spell checker work on gmail

I use gmail for work and I like to use the Firefox browser but a few weeks ago, the automatic spell checker stopped working and I don't know why. I have windows 10 on my pc. I know I can use the drop down arrow to check the spelling but I keep forgetting.

I've checked the language setting and spell checker is ticked.

Did you install any other adblocker or change A/V?

I'm sorry what is an a/v? And sorry if this is a silly question but what does ad blockers have to do with it? I'm using gmail in a business setting so there are all kinds of blocks and firewalls. The auto spell check used to work but suddenly stopped, I can't correlate this to any system changes, but then I wouldn't necessarily know.
