New tabs continually auto-opening whenever I use firefox 56.0.1 (64 bit) in Win10. These can have very loud music/videos that auto-play on opening. Some tabs profess to have found viruses and lock me out of firefox when I won't accept the link to their 'cure' and I have to close firefox down using Task Manager. This is getting really annoying and I am considering dumping firefox for good. Also non of the malware/adware scanners I've tried see any problem. Doesn't happen in Chrome by the way.

That's very annoying. One possible culprit would be an extension. To be able to review them in peace, I suggest starting Firefox in its Safe Mode. In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Now...

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any system extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious? If in doubt, disable or remove.

Sometimes a link will appear above an extension you chose to disable/remove to restart Firefox before the change takes effect. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

Thanks jscher2000. Tried what you recommended and also removed a couple of add-ons that were marked as 'Legacy'. Replaced them with other non-legacy add-ons. Also added 'New Tab Settings' add-on and set the new tab to same as my homepage. So far all is well. I'll comment again if anything changes. Thanks again for the help I really appreciate it.

I spoke too soon. They are all back along with the most annoying one - the threat warning (see screenshot) which sounds three loud dings sound followed by a female voice stating “Threat Has been Detected.”, which is repeated over and over until I close down Firefox, which I can only do by using Task Manager. Might be time to ditch Firefox after all.

Forgot to attach screenshot - sorry.

Do you have an active adblocker like uBlock Origin? With that, you won't ever see anything like this again.

more options

Hi Moses Yes, I have latest UBlock Origin in Firefox. But am still getting pages from revelblog.com and the like. Many seem to be soft porn based.

I have now also added Adlock 57+ to my firefox add-ons and this seems to have stopped some of the side ads that were appearing. However my tabs are still getting hijacked, especially when I click on internal links, like those in the menu for this site (for example the Edit Profile link). It seems pretty random though, not happening on every occasion, so it is hard to point at a cause.

Can you provide your troubleshooting information?

Please do the following:

  1. Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click on help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information.
    • Type about:support into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
  2. At the top of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  3. Now, go back to your forum post, right-click in the reply box and select Paste from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press the Ctrl+V keys) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

Have you tried scanning your PC with various tools? Constant hijacks of tabs without fishy extensions present in Firefox may show a larger problem. Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus protection built-in.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Please run all of the utilities above as each tool scans for different things.

Did that occur after exiting out of Safe Mode and starting Firefox normally?

When you get the two-line authentication required dialog, press the Esc key several times in a row quickly to break the cancel/reload cycle. When you get the long box, when it redisplays, there should be a checkbox near the bottom to prevent the site from showing further dialogs. Click that checkbox and then click OK. These approaches should allow you to close the tabs behind those kinds of dialogs without having to crash Firefox.

Preventing Restoration of Unwanted Tabs

Firefox will helpfully try to restore all your tabs after a crash. If you want to hide the session history files so Firefox can't use them for recovery at the next startup:

(1) Open your profile folder

Call up Windows Explorer (for example, hold down the Windows key and tap E). In the address bar, paste the following shortcut and press Enter to load it:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Here you may see just one semi-randomly named folder, or you may see several. You'll want to work with the one that has been updated the most recently in that case.

(2) Hide the sessionstore-backups folder

Each profile folder contains a subfolder named sessionstore-backups.

While Firefox is closed (post-crash, before starting it again):

right-click > Rename the sessionstore-backups folder to OLDsessionstore-backups (this is in case you do want to recover any tabs from your previous session(s) in the future).

When you start Firefox again, it should just go to your home page.

Bad extensions and malware are the most common culprits.

However, sometimes a program outside your browser sends addresses to Windows to open in your default browser, either based on a particular occurrence or on a schedule. One place to check for that is the Windows Task Scheduler. Some threads on that kind of attack:

Thank you also for your help.

This was after exiting safe mode and restarting normally.

I will try out your solution next time a lockout happens.
