How is Nightly supposed to update?

I have recently migrated to Nightly, however, I don't understand how to update it, exactly.

When I was browsing this afternoon, a window popped up telling me that there is a security update available.

I tried to install it, but apparently FF couldn't connect to the update server, and the window just displayed a flowing bar with a "trying to connect ..." cation.

The Help > About dialogue informs me that there are apparently updates available - but then I'm just redirected to the regular Nightly website.

Am I supposed to reinstall it? Do I just have to wait until the next update? Can I force an update?

OS: Debian 7.1

Yes you do have to download it again on Linux from the site. Since FF comes in a zipped tarball package (like a zip).

But that is horrible

Will my preferences and data be preserved?

If so I could just automate it, no biggie.

I do not actually use a Linux distro nightly. I am guessing it should update automatically.

The Windows Nightly does, and so does my Mozilla Nightly running on Linux. My Linux distro Aurora also updates * automatically, but I use Ubuntu normally not Debian.

Personally I use Nightly as an additional browser. I do not consider it a good idea to rely on Nightly as my main browser due to its experimental nature.

EDIT,
* I will clarify the above statement

My Linux distro Aurora also updates automatically, but I use Ubuntu

What I should have tried to explain is that the Mozilla versions of Firefox etc. on Linux Ubuntu do update automatically.

The Linux distro Aurora updates easily and semi automatically but a few days later than the Mozilla version. My Desktop Environment prompts me to accept upgrades of various packages and that includes Ubuntu Aurora.

Yes all addons, history, prefs etc. WILL NOT be deleted.

That is not a problem. Your data is stored in the profiles. You may have more than one profile if you wish. In fact if you have multiple versions of Firefox etc installed multiple profiles are almost essential.

See

What type of Nightly do you use ? Mozilla, distro, or both ?

Wait, now there are two contradictory answers.

What the hell is going on?

Is Nightly on Debian different than Nightly on other distributions?

Also it's normal for software on Windows to update itself, so I wont take that into account.

No that is wrong as you do not need to download each update on Linux regardless of Release/Beta/Aurora/Nighty channel build with the tarball version from mozila.org as it does internal software updates just like Windows and Mac since it existed on Firefox 1.5.

You do however need to have read/write permissions for the Firefox program folder. A easy way around this is to put it in a folder in /home/

Note that the Nighty and also Aurora development channels gets checkins pretty much every day so therefore gets a update each of those days.

Linux distro provided builds are updated in package manager and not in Firefox as those are third-party.

Nightly sadly isn't in the repos.

Also, I have rw permissions on the installation directory.

"Linux distro provided builds are updated in package manager and not in Firefox as those are third-party. "

FIrefox only, does not apply to nightly as they are not in the repos.

If you see a message that updates are available then this means that you currently do not have write permissions to the Firefox program directory as James wrote above.
So you may need to run Firefox as root or if you installed Firefox via the repositories then you need to update via there.
You can create a script to start Firefox for updating and run it with the required permissions.
I start Firefox via a file manager running as root for updating and update if necessary if I get an alert that updates are available as can happen if there has been a respin (unscheduled update).

Really Waka... trying to educate me when you made the wrong claim that you need to download each new tarball build from Mozilla.org for each new update.

Actually some Linux distros do provide packages of other channel builds of Firefox besides the Releases. However these builds are not updated by Mozilla as they are third-party.
