Actually some Linux distros do provide packages of other channel builds of Firefox besides the Releases. However these builds are not updated by Mozilla as they are third-party.

So you may need to run Firefox as root or if you installed Firefox via the repositories then you need to update via there.
You can create a script to start Firefox for updating and run it with the required permissions.
I start Firefox via a file manager running as root for updating and update if necessary if I get an alert that updates are available as can happen if there has been a respin (unscheduled update).

Also, I have rw permissions on the installation directory.

You do however need to have read/write permissions for the Firefox program folder. A easy way around this is to put it in a folder in /home/

That is not a problem. Your data is stored in the profiles. You may have more than one profile if you wish. In fact if you have multiple versions of Firefox etc installed multiple profiles are almost essential.

What type of Nightly do you use ? Mozilla, distro, or both ?

The Windows Nightly does, and so does my Mozilla Nightly running on Linux. My Linux distro Aurora also updates * automatically, but I use Ubuntu normally not Debian.

Personally I use Nightly as an additional browser. I do not consider it a good idea to rely on Nightly as my main browser due to its experimental nature.

EDIT,
* I will clarify the above statement

My Linux distro Aurora also updates automatically, but I use Ubuntu

What I should have tried to explain is that the Mozilla versions of Firefox etc. on Linux Ubuntu do update automatically.

The Linux distro Aurora updates easily and semi automatically but a few days later than the Mozilla version. My Desktop Environment prompts me to accept upgrades of various packages and that includes Ubuntu Aurora.

If so I could just automate it, no b2013-06-28T02:52:21-07:00Yannbanehttps://support.mozilla.org/it/questions/963311#answer-450018
But that is horrible

Yes you do have to download it again on Linux from the site.
