My university email account is based on Gmail. Since I didn't want to manually look up Gmail IMAP and SMTP configuration details, I wanted to type a Gmail address for Thunderbird to automatically detect those settings, then change the email address so I can log in with my university email address. However, when changing the address, the detected settings are cleared, and this is very frustrating.

Did you have a point? The change of settings on change of address is how it is designed to work.

I would suggest that standard gmail setting may not even work for your university mail. Gsuite is not gmail. despite the similarities.
