If Thunderbird 52.5.0(64) is already running on my Ubuntu 16.04 system, then I get the error dialog quoted next,

"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding.

To open a new window, you must first close the existing
Thunderbird process, or restart your system."

This is new behavior since installing FireFox 57.0.1(64). The new FireFox breaks a lot of things that have been working for a decade or longer. I'm not sure of the point to that: if it's broken, it's much more secure because you can not use it all, right?

I'm wondering if the issue with mailto: links not opening a new message window composition window in Thunderbird 52.5.0(64) is a known problem and if there is a known solution or workaround in Thunderbird or FireFox? Thanks.

can you please try another browser.... these sorts of issues can be either the sender application, the operating system or the receiver application. By changing the browser we get some idea if it is firefox.

Create a mailto link say on your desktop and click that. does it have the same result.

Matt, thanks for your response. Using an iPad now so can’t make an icon / link at this time. I have tried mailto: links from Chrome browser and they work correctly, opening a composition window in Thunderbird. I will also try with the icon when next at the desktop.
