I use personalized e-mail addresses, e.g. I meet a guy called Tony, I give him my e-mail address:

emailfromtony@mydomain.com

This works because I own the domain and mailserver. But when I reply to his email with Thunderbird, my default identity is automatically taken, revealing my 'real' email address to Tony, myname@mydomain.com

What I am looking for is a mechanism, where replying to a message uses the 'TO:' address from the received message to be in the 'FROM:' field of the reply message. I am aware, that this might be problematic in the case of mailing lists and such. Does today exist this possiblity with Thunderbird?

Thanks for your time, much appreciated!

RE: the 'TO:' address from the received message Is this 'TO' email address in the email, the same email address as the mail account where the email is stored?

eg: 'TO' 'bloggyman @ domain' is an email in 'bloggyman @ domain' mail account.

or 'TO' 'bloggyman @ domain' is an email in 'myname @ domain' mail account.

In your example I guess the latter, bloggyman@domain.com in myname@domain account.

There is one email account myname@domain.com and this is the default identity. Then, due to catch all I see all kinds of email addresses let's call them <random>@mydomain.com that all end up under this account. Now when I reply to one of those emails, rather then replying from my default identity, I would like to FROM: field to be set to the very same address as the original message was addressed to in order to protect my privacy.

Does that make sense? Is that something Thunderbird is capable out of the box or maybe with an add-on?

You can create "identities" (aliases), in Thunderbird for each e-mail address, but I know of no way to automatically put any unconfigured e-mail address into the "From".

If you are motivated enough, you can try searching the add-ons for one to do what you want. This is not a common scenario.
