not sure of your question. but my comuter will go into safe mode but from there will still not get past the win8 login screen. when I enter my password, that is when the screen goes into the dark blue color. when I woke the computer up from hibernation this morning it seemed OK again, so i immediately re downloaded firefox(deleted it last night) there is something called blinkiland as the search engine.

I uninstalled whatever i could find but called blinki land , it is still there. I tried to do a restore point , which is when the computer went to the other blue. like the login screen and said it must restart and i have notbeen in since but one time today I actually got into safe mode to my destop in black but it would no connect to the internet son could not fix anything or do diagnostics"? not sure what that mean when you ask me to start in safe mode 'with networking? thanks for reading this!

When a computer is started in Safe Mode, only select programs are allowed to run, most are from the manufacture. Others, including bad programs, are not loaded. So if your issue is gone, then a program is to blame.

There are several types of Safe Mode. The first only runs the bare essentials. The second is with networking, allowing you access to the web.

Some virus programs corrupt computers to the point that they can't be started. If this is happening to you, you will need the help of a tech. If you have a system restore disk, you can use that.

UPDATE on my blue screen. I managed to get into the safe mode screen, then clicked the advanced tab, and did a partial reset. not the full reset to factory, but just deleted files. that did the trick, so it must have been a corrupt file or a downloaded item , so I am back and running, los t all my stuff like pictures and crap. one day will learn how to back stuff up! thanks everybody!

does security essentials work in win 8? it says win7 and vista?

This I do not know. I don't want to put one company over another, but;

This is a trial version that is fully functional. You will have 30 days. Then you can pay for the subscription, or remove it.

I am using Avast paid version now and the defender, one problem is , the action center keeps giving me an alert they are not running? when I click the turn on button the prompt pops up, asks if I trust the publishers , I say yes, i trust them turn on, they do not turn on? how do I fix that? I had Norton once , too annoying, they load you up with too much bloat ware, and only 30 days, the avst was having a great sale for $19.99 for the year! and how can i stop my desktop background pic from opening in the win 8 start menu it was opening as my dsktop all day!

I hope you are making progress.

I am presuming you were posting from an Android phone but only because you had problems with the PC, and that this question relates to Desktop Firefox on a PC (including laptops).

You do not need it or any other AV

  • What did you scan with ?
and what were the results ?
  • Are you still having issues with Firefox ?
    • Or do the problems only now relate to use of your new Windows 8 system and setting that up ?
      And installing software.
    • If you have problems specific to Firefox what are they ?
Do you still have problems with the search engine and Blinkland ?

my computer seems to be ok now. I had managed to get to the safe mode advanced page and did a partial reset. that seemed to have gotten rid of my issue. lost my files one day will have to learn how to back up files before i do that! I believe I downloaded that blinkiland search engine from a a Firefox install. I now have Avast anti virus. they had a good deal on the premium for a year. did not know about defender, since it was in the background. hope this is the end of this mess. this is a similar problem with my old win 7 computer.but that was much worse!

I would recommend an external hard drive about twice the size of your current drive. Or you can get a larger one. This way, files / clips and other things you don't use much can still be available without taking up space.

Some computers can create a boot disk for such emergencies.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

I never think about such things until something goes bad! i do like the idea of a second external one, does make sense. are they hard to set up? do they stay always plugged in? never used one, sounds good!

more options

Most are plug and play. I would recommend an uninterrupted power source in case of blackouts. They don't cost too much so look around.

got a quick question for you, downloaded that FEBE program ,seems great idea, running a scan.at 3pm was @ 7.6. it is now 6pm , has not budget from 7.6%. should I touch it? that seems like a stopped program to me ?not sure how to proceed with the back up?
