Edge Suddenly Taking Over (My Beloved Firefox) - MS Edge? BLECH!
Hi! I'm on a relatively new to me (refurb) desktop computer running Win 10 Pro (64 bit)* and Firefox 143.0.3.
In the past week both Firefox and Win 10 have updated. I don't know what happened, but now when I boot up or reboot, my computer opens to MS Edge. Yuck!
Every single time I have to reinstall Firefox! Once I do that, all is well again. I have all my bookmarks back, etc.
It also keeps changing my "default to Firefox" browser setting, turning it OFF, while I'm using Firefox. I repeatedly have to keep going in and clicking to make FF to the default browser again.
Why is it doing this? How do I stop it?
Anyway, I know I can't delete Edge or uninstall it. How do I shove it back into the black hole it has lived in until now?
Thanks very much in advance for any help offered. :)

Hi,
If Firefox gets removed from your computer, it's definitely not something that should happen, and I doubt Edge could do it. Do you use any security software? Could you please verify that Firefox indeed gets deleted by checking if (after a reboot) its install directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) has a firefox.exe file?
If Firefox gets removed, that explains the changes in you default browser settings, so let's focus on the first issue.
Hi Denys! Thank you for answering and asking! Firefox is not being deleted or removed. More like Edge pushes it aside and tries to take over.
I have discovered since my OP that at that point I need only click the Firefox icon I have saved (I don’t have to reinstall) and my Firefox then is back the same as it always was.
Also when I search, it uses Bing instead of Google or DuckDuckGo.
Again, Thank you! Kathy

P.S. ack! I have discovered since my OP that I only have to click the ff icon I have saved instead of having to reinstall.
Hi,
That's great that Firefox does not get removed! Do I understand right that the issue is your default browser preference getting wiped out?
Also, if you were referring to Firefox when mentioning Bing, check out Manage Firefox search settings.
Hi again Denys, Thanks for your quick response! The answer is ... sort of. As I said, when I boot up or reboot the browser that comes up is Edge. I want nothing to do with it! I want to boot right to Firefox. I know how to get to Firefox but I don't want to have to do that every single time I boot my computer!
I know how to set search preferences in Firefox. The point is that Edge is overriding them, too.
TIA! Kathy
Ok,
Try the following:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager.
- Alternatively, you can right-click your taskbar (a line typically in the bottom of your screen) and select Task Manager in the context menu,
- Select the Startup tab at the top of the Task Manager window.
- Look for Edge / Microsoft Edge in the list. If it's there, right-click it and select Disable from the context menu.
To open Firefox on startup, check out Open Firefox automatically when you start your computer.
Does that help?
Hi Denys, Edge is already disabled in Task Manager. That's one of the first things I did. I tried right now to screenshot Task Manager to show you, but it failed (page too buried).
Okay. I just went and checked. Both settings were already checkmarked - Start Firefox on Startup and Make FF my default browser. But when I boot up, Edge boots up still yet as the browser. That's why I'm here. I can fix a lot of computer stuff but I can't seem to get rid of Edge and I can't seem to stop it from overriding Firefox and loading on Startup.
