Odd issue with downloading.

So I recently reinstalled windows and noticed that if I select the option that asks me each time where a file should be saved before downloading it, the browser appears to begin downloading the file (I can see the .part file in the default folder) but the window that actually allows me to browse for a location in windows explorer never shows up and thus, I am not able to actually download the file. However, if I select the "pick a folder and everything will download to that folder" option, it downloads just fine. I'm wondering if there was a way to reinstall firefox but keep all if not most of my settings and tabs etc.

Hi Tanish, thanks for the detailed explanation 🙂

From what you’re describing, this looks more like a Windows “Save As” dialog issue rather than a problem with the download itself (the fact that the .part file appears confirms Firefox is starting the download correctly).

Before going for a full reinstall, I’d suggest trying the following:

Refresh Firefox: this reinstalls Firefox while keeping bookmarks, passwords, tabs, and most settings. It often fixes issues that show up after a Windows reinstall. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings

If that doesn’t help, try creating a new Firefox profile and see if the save dialog works there. If it does, the current profile is likely corrupted.

You can also start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to rule out extensions or custom settings interfering with the Windows file picker.

As a temporary workaround, using “Save files to a specific folder” is a good option since it completely bypasses the Windows dialog.

Hey Nathan,

Thanks for your quick response. The issue does seem to have gone away but I don't know what exactly fixed it. After going through the article you sent me, I decided to just clear the startup cache and give it a shot. Somehow, it appears that the issue no longer exists. I think some of it definitely had to do with the reinstall as it wasn't exactly how most people would want to do one. (My bootloader corrupted itself after a power surge. I ended up installing windows from scratch and then copying my program and user files over from the old installation manually). So there's a chance that something wrong in the cache files would've been enough to cause it but it seems unlikely.

Regardless, thanks for your help.

Cheers!

Oh and one more thing I just remembered, I did run sfc /scannow and a repair through DISM so I think the issue was in fact with Windows as I remember DISM finding something wrong and then fixing it.
