How do you delete old bookmarks and folders when all the methods of delelting do not work, they have no effect at all?

I am using a mac, I am deleting some duplicate imported bookmarks and folders. FF lets me delete most bookmarks, but not select ones. Some folders can be deleted and others not.

I tried the three delete methods (toolbar, righthand click, and command delete) nothing seems to work. I tried restart FF and then the computer as well. Tried online suggestions. No luck
