There's been a number of issue reports on Github related to notifications. Addressing these are a top priority for Thunderbird as noted on their roadmap.

The below issue ticket on github is similar to your own. https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/issues/10936

A fix was applied and scheduled for inclusion in Thunderbird 25 (the upcoming release).
