I cannot sent out emails in Thunderbird
I have more than 6 decades experience using computers. I have carefully followed all your instructions on how to fix this problem, to no avail. Both desktops and both laptops give the same result. One time (only) it said there is a problem with the certificate. I have been using Thunderbird a very long time. Thank you all so very much.

I cannot sent out emails in Thunderbird
What prevents you from sending messages?
I have carefully followed all your instructions on how to fix this problem
What instructions?
One time (only) it said there is a problem with the certificate.
You'd need to provide the exact error message.
This is a repeat of the message which was sent this morning at approximately 0830 via the Thunderbird/help contents/sign in route.
While in Thunderbird and going to help/help contents/emails/cannot send messages/ leads me to a series of steps (instructions) designed by Thunderbird to solve the problem, but to no avail.
The error messages say: Options are: Retry Enter New Password Cancel
I have tried all options only cancel works.
Sorry, guess I'm getting frustrated, the problem started on 6 April, and I've been working on it since. The error message said log in to server smtp.mail.yahoo.com failed. The options are as I stated above.
Thank you.
You may need to 'Allow apps that use less secure sign in'. https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN27791.html
Yahoo is a somewhat unreliable email service, so there's always a chance the problem is on the server. You can check with them, but don't hold your breath. Or just wait a couple of days and see whether the problem goes away.
Dear christ1, From your last email, it appears that there may have been some miscommunication. As stated before I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops from which I access Thunderbird email. I do not access Thunderbird email from any smart phone.
Sorry to read what you said about Yahoo, perhaps my only solution is to change ISP.
As previously stated, I've been working the problem since 6 Apr 18, not likely anything will change in a couple of days.
Thank you
Please post your Troubleshooting Information.
At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button
, then select Help > Troubleshooting Information.
Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.
Dear crist1,
here is the Troubleshooting Information you requested.
Oops it is in a pdf file and there is no obvious way to attach it to this message. Some direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Just copy and paste the text. No need to package it into any other file format.
The "copy" bit is easy. Just click the button you see under Help|Troubleshooting Information.
Then paste into your reply here. ctrl+v usually does it.
I did try that first, and it copied into Clipboard fine but then after signing into Mozilla support it was no longer in Clipboard. I will try it again now that support is already open. I just tried it again and this time info is in Clipboard however I have found no way of copying (copy under Edit is not bold). The last instruction was to copy to Clipboard, I have done that it is there. This time I will go back to the Troubleshooting Information page and NOT click on the Copy text to clipboard button and look for a copy option.
Thank you

Change the server name to outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net (as for account3).
Dear christ1 If you have detected a 3rd account on my Thunderbird email software, there is a problem. On 20 Mar 2011 Verizon set up our DSL internet accounts, mine and my wife's. I'm only aware of 2 accounts.
BACKGROUND INFO WHICH MAY POSSIBLY BE HELPFUL
No one uses my computers except my wife and me. We very seldom go on the internet except for Thunderbird email and a small amount of shopping, using the desktop connected via Ethernet to my DSL modem. On 20 Mar 2011 Verizon, my ISP provider at the time, set both of our outgoing Thunderbird email to: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net and everything has worked well until 6 April 2018. At sometime within the past year Verizon has turned its emailing service over to its subsidiary Yahoo. Verizon/Yahoo no longer gives advice regarding Thunderbird email settings, they will only give advice on MS Outlook. As I said earlier support.mozilla.org/Cannot send messages asks me to verify my SMTP outgoing email settings - which I have done and that is why you see my account setting as smtp.mail.yahoo.com. Neither setting works. A friend of mine who also has Verizon/yahoo ISP has been using outgoing Thunderbird setting of smtp.verizon.net. That also does not work for me.
Thank you
You have two-user installed accounts, both with yahoo/verizon, and the standard built-in Local Folders account. This is entirely normal and as expected.
If you're not using this last account, this might be a good time to find out what it can do for you.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Local_Folders
Mine is busy with newsgroups, RSS feeds and my Saved Searches.
Dear christ1,
Surely with more than 60 years of experience using computers and solving problems when they do arise (albeit with help from experts as needed), you must know I have explored all reasonable avenues.
My computers are very well maintained, and updated as needed, please tell me your honest opinion as to the probability of Advanced System Repair (ASR) being able to solve my problem. The problem seems to be with the Verizon/yahoo server. Though not as convenient as Thunderbird my Verizon/yahoo ISP website presents no problem with sending or forwarding emails.
Thank you
If you have detected a 3rd account on my Thunderbird email software, there is a problem.
No, I'm just quoting the information you posted:
account3: INCOMING: account3, , (pop3) incoming.yahoo.verizon.net:995, SSL, passwordCleartext OUTGOING: , outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net:465, SSL, passwordCleartext, true
Verizon/Yahoo no longer gives advice regarding Thunderbird email settings
Server settings are generic, and not specific for a particular email client. The SMTP settings for your two Verizon/Yahoo accounts differ. Which one is correct you'll have to confirm with Verizon.
I've pointed you to the 'Allow apps that use less secure sign in' setting before, which you did seem to ignore. Good luck.

Dear christ1,
I should hope that the Troubleshooting Information I sent you means more to you than to me. I have never looked at it nor obtained it before. Looking at it now I see the 3 accounts and I still find that odd. The initial set up by Verizon on 20 Mar 2011 was for 2 accounts, one mine and one for my wife. In my Thunderbird/Tools/Account Settings it lists 2 accounts, one mine and one my wife's. The 3 accounts may be accounted for by the Verizon/Yahoo technical expert who took control of my computer on 7 Apr 18, spent a very considerable amount of time, but could not solve the problem. Or perhaps I incorrectly created it while trying to set up my newly found outgoing server setting for my account (from Yahoo website). I will try to work on that next, hopefully correcting it.
Yes I have out off using a less secure sign in setting, at least at this point in time. I do not make changes to my computer until I have at least some knowledge of the ramifications of such a change. Is it less secure for the incoming emails, outgoing emails, or both? Is it changing the way Thunderbird operates on my desktop? Is it built by Thunderbird? I am still thinking about what you said about Yahoo and the possibility of changing my ISP DSL provider, though that will also take a fair amount of my time.
Thank you
You don't have to change ISP in order to use a different email provider. If you don't like the data mining practices employed by yahoo, google or microsoft (aka outlook.com, live.com, hotmail.com) then you are free to look for other email providers. I think GMX is about as clean and trustworthy as you can get today.
All of your current connections to external servers, both incoming and outgoing, are using encrypted connections. It says "SSL" but in all likelihood is actually TLS.
Referring to SSL or indeed TLS as "less secure" is a FUD ploy to get you to use their webmail portal, where they can feed you adverts and draw you into using their in-house managed content. It's all good for advertising revenue.
The alternative to TLS is most likely OAuth2, which is arguably no more secure than TLS. Thunderbird has implemented support for OAuth2 for use with googlemail, but not yet with other providers.
Do you see two distinct accounts in Thunderbird's main window? Given that both of yours use POP, it is possible they have been set to use a common Global Inbox, which would explain why you appear to be unaware of the third account, Local Folders. If this is so, you are actually using Local Folders but the two individual accounts would be effectively hidden.
Dear Zenos,
Thank you for your nice and informative note. We have no emails either coming or going that we feel must be secretive, but when someone says insecure the thought comes to mind of someone sending emails out as mine, which are not mine.
My main objective is to use Thunderbird as I have for a long time, though right now I cannot send out or forward from Thunderbird. It stopped on 6 Apr 18. I changed back to the outgoing server setting which has worked since 20 Mar 2011.
Since all 4 well maintained computers stopped sending or forwarding on the 6 Apr 18 and gave the same error message, I find it hard to not believe it is due to Verizon/yahoo outgoing server. This is even though I pay a monthly service charge to them. But then again a friend of mine is using Verizon/yahoo with no problem sending.
What are your thoughts for solving my problem?
Thank You

You never made it clear.
Did you go to this page https://login.yahoo.com/account/security?.scrumb=sZ8FSpv8Nn5
Did you ensure Allow apps that use less secure sign-in is enabled? It must be for Thunderbird to work.
Have you enabled the account key on that page? IF so, you must create an application password on their site to use with Thunderbird.
Have you enabled two step verification on that page. IF so, you must create an application password on their site to use with Thunderbird.
Dear Zenos,
The link you sent me talks about cell phones, I do not use a cell phone and If I ever did surely it would have nothing to do with Verizon/yahoo.
I use only my 2 DT computers and 2 LT computers. Must I do something to them to make them less secure and to work for sending out emails?
Are there any email providers which work well with Thunderbird software?
Thank You
Dear Christ1,
A SOLUTION HAS BEEN FOUND
I called Verizon 800-837-4966 and was told I must call Yahoo at 888-439-4838 to solve the problem.
Yahoo said they can solve my problem for $399.
Great companies we have Verizon and Yahoo or should we assume that they don't know what their employees in other countries are doing!
I think I'll wait for a different solution.
Thank You.
