What was the error message? We know exactly what you tell us. So far we have "something did not work"

I didn't copy the wording of the error message but it was something to the effect that the "patch" could not be applied. My computer downloads very slowly and there were two downloads. One was 9.7Mb and the other was 47Mb. These took about 15 minutes to download and then I got the message that the update was not successful. As I recall there was a message to the effect that I could do a manual download of the update at some URL that I did not copy down. Thunderbird works perfectly well without these updates but I'm afraid that it fixes some vulnerability. Frank Pirolo

Start Windows in safe mode. Delete the directory "Mozilla Thunderbird" in %ProgramFiles(x86)% Restart Windows Redownload and reinstall Thunderbird from http://getthunderbird.com/

I don't want to try reloading Thunderbird unless there is some assurance that the files (and contents) that I have created will not be lost. In other words, I want the fix to not have any effect except to allow the update. I cannot find any information in the Knowledge Base or answered questions where it talks about the impact of reinstalling Thunderbird if you are already a long time user. Frank Pirolo

The URL states that my "Profile" is in a different location than the Thunderbird Program. I am still concerned that reloading the Thunderbird Program will cause the loss of all the many folders that I have created over the years such as Financial","Health","Shopping", etc, etc. Frank Pirolo

> The URL states that my "Profile" is in a different location than the Thunderbird Program. That is correct

> I am still concerned that reloading the Thunderbird Program will cause the loss of all the many folders that I have created over the years such as Financial","Health","Shopping", etc, etc. There's nothing more I can say except that you shouldn't have problems (as the URL implies) and you have backups, right?
