docx attachments make MS Word hang at open

When I click on any .docx attachment, TB opens Word, but the Word splash screen hangs forever. Other TB attachments open in their respective default programs fine. Using: Windows 10, Word 2016. Word options has 'protected' boxes unchecked. I tried with AVG antivirus disabled. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Try saving the file to disk and then open it

Yes, I can save the file, then close TB, open Word by itself, then search for the file in Word to then open it. Then close Word then reopen TB again to continue. But that is the very rigmarole I want to avoid. I used to be able to click on the attachment in TB and then Word opened with the file right there. Is there no configuration in TB to allow me this simple function? Thanks.
