Having downloaded 10,000 emails from an account I had but which was been closed down, my email all disappeared. The activity manager was filing them? How can I retrieve these emails?

Are you talking about an imap mail account? Did you do this download on the same day as the account closed? Did that mail account synchronise with server after the account was closed?

Did you synchronise folder for offline use to get a copy in Thunderbird? Did you then stop the account from synchronising or go into Offline mode?

Once in offline mode were you putting copies of all emails in all folders into 'Local Folders' mail account?
