how come the previous page button works when private browsing is on. logic would tell me that if no history or cache is kept that firefox shouldn't be able to know what my previous pages were. tell me why this happens or where the cache is kept for firefox to navigate backwords when private browsing is on

Only the disk cache isn't used. The memory cache is still used. See the about:cache page (via the location bar).
