Will I be able to successfully download the complete Thunderbird Update if I 'donate'?

I suspect Micro$oft Windows 10 - End of Support is obfuscating Enrolling in Extended Security Updates and preventing Thunderbird from sending eMail.

Thankyou Toad Hall and all others,

Resolution achieved, the problem was the ISP supplied Mercku Router needed an updated firmware driver.
  go well, Peter.

Need more info. Are you trying to install TB and getting errors? If so, list them and provide screenshots.

Do you mean the Extended Support Release version?

Sorry Ed, I've been busy... eventually managed to get Extended Security Updates for my Win 10 but that hasn't solved the Thunderbird sending (SMTP) problem for ~20 days now! ; so I investigated Windows logs and found the Thunderbird omni.ja file had been edited June 12th. I also found a Mozilla Maintenance Service Error on that morning..? I've also managed to Update the Thunderbird to 152.0 since yet the problem remains persists ?!! - go well, Peter.

Is the problem that you cannot send messages? That problem is usually solved in account settings. If you share your SMTP settings, someone may be able to help.

If that is the problem, then donations, Windows 10, “complete” Thunderbird, etc. are not relevant.

Donations are not required to use Thunderbird.

Thanx Ric, the Mail Server settings are correct (I can receive POP) and the ISP support people are working on problem which are also affecting my WiFi (I'm on satellite because I have NO mobile signal here).

Windows 10 is still OK with the current Thunderbird version 152.0 (Release) and also with version 140.12.0esr (Thunderbird extended support Release)

If problem with network then does it not cause a problem with download as well?

Firewall - Might be controlled by Windows OS or an Anti-Virus you installed. This should be set up to ensure nothing is blocking ports etc. Access Firewall and make sure the Thunderbird program is set up as an allowed program.

Anti-Virus: Is it allowed to scan everything and scan outgoing mail ? If yes, then it might be causing a delay when sending and this could effect you. Suggest you test: Restart computer using 'Safe Mode with networking' - this will require you use an ethernet cable to connect to router/hub. This will test without AV without needing to alter anything in AV. OR make your Thunderbird profile folder exempt from scanning and also switch off scanning outbound mail. This is the Thunderbird profile to exempt - assuming you got Thunderbird from the official website; it prevents scanning anything in that folder or any of it's contents, folders etc.

  • C://Users/username/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird

VPN - check computer for a VPN which may have been enabled. Many servers do not like VPN because it hides your IP address so server auto blocks as they think you may be a hacker. Many Anti-Virus now offer VPN and in some cases people have discovered they had been enabled automatically. Switch it off or create a split tunnelling and set up Thunderbird to use it.

Would it be for a free email like a gmail email address or a personal website email address ? Gmail use 'Authentication Method : Oauth2' for both incoming and outgoing server settings - check this has been set up.

Here is the gmail smtp: Authentication Method needs to be 'Oauth2'

  • Server name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • Username: full gmail email address
  • Authentication Method: Oauth2
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS

Then also check that cookies are allowed.

  • Settings > Privacy & Security
  • WEb Content
  • Select 'Accept cookies from sites'
  • click on 'Exceptions' button
  • Set up the following with status 'Allow': https://accounts.google.com
  • click on 'Save Changes'

If you are setting up Oauth2 - then make sure you remove any saved password for account, then exit Thunderbird, you should get a prompt for password by gmail to allow gmail access and then it creates the oauth token for Thunderbird to use.

re: SMTP in general If Port 465 then use Connection Security: SSL/TLS

However, many servers need to use the following Port and Connection Security, so it's always worth seeing if this set up works. If Port: 587 Then use Connection Security: STARTTLS

Remember - after changing and saving - suggest you restart Thunderbird to ensure all the changes have been saved and used.
