First it starts lagging for no apparent reason and slows the whole machine down - I'm not able to switch to terminal to kill Firefox. Even the mouse pointer starts lagging up to a point that I'm not able to click close button. After a while, it either crashes, or I need to reboot the machine in order to make it work again.

Just for the interest of anyone who will look into it, I already did sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade I also did sudo apt install firefox afterwards. It doesn't solve the issue.

Did you try safe mode? Did you try turning of hardware acceleration? Can you run strace on the Firefox process to see what happens when the browser starts to lag?

Also try downloading another copy of Firefox and run it from the folder. Do not sign into your Firefox account and see if you have the same issue.
