Firefox73.0 Lockwise not listing saved passwords and logins

more options

Overnight it seems that Firefox is no longer reading my old saved logins and passwords. I have checked to see that the logins.json and key4.db files are present, but the new Lockwise page shows nothing. When I look at the about:protections page, it shows that I still have 400+ logins and passwords protected. I tried to make a new profile and import backup data and Firefox still does not see the saved logins and passwords in the new profile. Any ideas on what is causing this behavior? I have so many accounts, and would like to get this functionality working again.

The bug report sounds like a migration problem from key3.db to key4.db where the SDR key wasn't migrated properly.

Do you still have a key3.db in your profile folder ?

You can try the steps in comment 23 by opening the profile with Firefox 68 ESR.

This is a common problem for people who previously disabled multiprocess (e10s) in Firefox. This prevents Firefox from creating the necessary process to view the logins and passwords, while also breaking other functionality in Firefox.

In Firefox 68, the ability to disable multiprocessing was removed for this reason. However, some users still attempted to disable this feature using other methods.

I believe the only possible way to disable multiprocessing is to add the MOZ_FORCE_DISABLE_E10S environment variable to your computer (as outlined by this website).

If you did that or if you have that environment variable set for some reason, you need to remove it and restart your computer to be able to see the logins in Firefox Lockwise.

Hope this helps.

After looking through all of the environment settings on the system and within Firefox, the multiprocess windows feature has not been disabled.

Does the issue still happen with you run Firefox in Safe Mode?

It's possible that the other password manager extension you are using (or maybe even another extension) is causing the issue.

If safe mode doesn't help, I'd recommend also trying with your security software (anti-virus) disabled, to rule out any possible conflict with that.

Anything logins related in the Browser Console ?

You can boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

So, given the above suggestions, I did try the following;

1. Firefox in safe mode: There was no change in behavior while in safe mode. Logins and passwords are still not read.

2. Norton disabled: Again, there was no change in behavior.

After reviewing that bug report, what was initially reported definitely matches what I am seeing with my browser. And apparently, my question was linked to the bug report thread as well.

I did use a Master Password, so I wonder if that has something to do with this issue.

Out of curiosity, does setting the signon.management.overrideURI preference on the about:config page to empty give you the ability to view the logins and passwords using the previous Firefox password manager instead of Firefox Lockwise?

NOTE: This isn't a permanent solution to the problem, just a troubleshooting step. Eventually, the old password manager may be removed from Firefox and fully replaced with Firefox Lockwise, so you should reset the signon.management.overrideURI preference back to it's default value when you are done testing.

I'd also be interested to see if you get any error messages in the Browser Console when you attempt to open Firefox Lockwise, as cor-el previously suggested.

If you press the menu button on Firefox (the three lines) and select Tools and Browser Console, that will open the appropriate window. This is the window where the majority of warnings and error messages from Firefox are sent.

Depending on how long you have had Firefox open, there may be a few things displayed in the window, which is normal. If you press the trash can icon in the top-left of the window, that will clear previous messages from the website.

Once the window is cleared, try opening Firefox Lockwise. If any errors or other messages are printed in that window, post a screenshot to this thread.

These messages can usually provide a lot more information on exactly what's going wrong.

Unfortunately, the clearing that preference did not fix the issue.

I took the steps for generating the error messages when opening Lockwise (image posted). Not exactly sure why it states it cannot the profile directory since it can find all of my book marks and everything else related to the profile.

That looks like a problem with the secret decoder ring (SDR). Not sure if this is about the master password or a problem with the key file and logins.json not matching.

I don't know how the troubleshoot or fix this and recover the passwords.

Did you recently add or modified the master password ?

more options

No... the master password has been in place for well over a year. Not sure how many update there have been in that time period.

There seems to be more info on this in that bug report , but I have no idea exactly how to do what they are suggesting since I have been doing automatic updates.

Well, it was not as straightforward as I would have liked, but the procedure worked! Since I had made some additional login changes, I decided to use the sync feature to port the old passwords from the old profile to my phone, and bring them back in to the new default profile created by Firefox73. Hopefully this is the last time I have to go through this.

Thanks everyone for the help!
